CHAPTER EIGHT

CONNER

"That's Angel's warning," I say, grabbing my gun off the bedside table. "They found us."

An engine roars outside the window, followed by a crunch of metal on metal that sounds like two cars ramming into each other.

"Get down!" I snap at Tex.

He hits the floor as the door slams open and I flip the mattress onto its side, ducking behind it. The first shot punches a scattering of holes straight through the mattress, buckshot burying itself in the wall behind us. Tex is pressed flat to the floor on his side. He hit the ground hard and it must have hurt, but better to bang up his ribs a bit more than take a bullet. He's not armed and I've just got my Walther PPK/S, holding ten rounds of .22 Long Rifle ammunition. My big guns are in the bag I left by the door, like an idiot. I should have kept it on me, but I wanted a minute with Tex and let myself get distracted. I don't know how many guys are at the door, but I have to assume it's all three of them. Angel hasn't made a sound since his warning so I'm guessing that car crash took him out of commission, at least for now. It ain't ideal, but I've faced worse odds than this. I can take out three guys with ten bullets.

"Stay low, and don't get up until I give the all-clear."

Tex nods frantically, looking panicked. I wish I'd asked him earlier if he knows how to handle a gun, if he can take mine and defend himself if I get unlucky, but there's no time for that now. I can't worry about him, same as I can't worry about Angel out there. I need to focus everything I've got on the men coming to kill us.

Pressing one shoulder against the mattress, I steal a look around the edge. Brick stands in the doorway, his huge bulk filling the whole frame. He's got a Winchester Model 101 double-barrel shotgun in his hands. I pull back behind the mattress as another burst of buckshot scatters around me.

"Fuck," I mutter, ducking as low as I can get. "This could get messy."

"Where's Angel?" Tex demands.

I don't know, so I don't answer. I sure could use the backup, but it ain't something I can count on. Leaning out again, I take aim and fire in a split second. Brick is so big it's hard to miss him, but I don't stay out in the open long enough to be sure. The mattress is flimsy and won't hold up long if he keeps shooting it full of buckshot. Another round or two of that, and it'll be punched full of so many holes he'll be able to see straight through it. The room is small, and Brick and his friends can only get in through the door or the window. Best-case scenario, I can pick them off one by one as they try to enter. Worst-case, they all get in at once and then we're shooting each other point-blank like fish in a goddamn barrel.
